The Best Blenders in Canada

Whether refreshing smoothies or slushies, or silky sauces and soups, a blender can be a great component in your kitchen. However, the wrong blender can feel extremely limiting – if your blender cannot crush ice, how are you going to enjoy a nice daiquiri on a hot summer day? That is why we wrote this guide to the best blenders in Canada – to take out the guess work and get a blender that suits your intended use in the kitchen.

Our review of the top-rated blenders in Canada also includes common blender questions, pros and cons, as well as a full guide on how to choose a blender.

Our top picks

How to pick the right blender

Now, how do you pick the best blender for your lifestyle? Choosing the ideal one can be a bit complicated because some have different features that may or may not be necessary for your needs.

Blades & Motor – There are a lot of factors included in how well a blender can blend – jar shape, jar size, blending modes – but perhaps the most important is the blades and the motors. While sharp blades can be a solid contribution, our highest rated blender from Vitamix relies on strong blades with a powerful motor so the speed of the blender does the blending. Motor strength is perhaps the strongest aspect in a blender in determining how strong it will perform, but a blender needs strong blades for it to be capable of blending frozen fruit.

Components – Some blenders feature a collection of blending jars and lids, and some come with one singular jar. So the question becomes: what do you use a blender for? If you are making smoothies for one, you should opt for a blender with a smaller cup and can probably get by with a smaller option. If you make large batches of soups and sauces? Get a blender with a larger jar. Both? Go for the options that have a collection of compatible jars.

Cleaning – Some blenders can be an absolute pain to clean. That is why we tried to recommend blenders with dishwasher safe components or have self cleaning capabilities.

Price – A restaurant-grade blender is going to come with a restaurant-grade price tag. So, depending on your budget, you may or may not have to forego some features in your blender.

Our methodology

Different blenders are designed for different purposes, so we considered a wide range of blenders to fit different criteria you may be looking for. Ideally, a blender will be able to make a delicious smoothie with a nice, homogenous texture at the very minimum, since smoothies are by far the most popular reason for people to buy a blender. Other qualities like how versatile the blender is, how many components are included, and how easy it is to clean were considered in the making of this list. Then we added blenders over a wide range of styles and price range that fit these criteria.

After more than 25 hours of research, we compiled a list of each product and its features. We went through more than 15 product review guides all over the Internet and countless product reviews from verified users. We only considered products with an average 4-star review or higher from customers online.

The top blender overall

Vitamix Ascent A2500

One day, when I finally purchase a Vitamix of my own, I can check it off my bucket list. Vitamix is a company renowned by many customers for its top-rated blenders, even if their prices are high. Found in both commercial and test kitchens all over the world, Vitamix is at the top of the blender game, and within its own ranks, we like the Ascent A2500 as the best Vitamix blender.

“Why are Vitamix blenders held in such high regard?” you might ask, having just read that this writer has lifelong aspirations for owning one. For starters, Vitamix blenders are very powerful, handling whatever thrown into them excellently. The Vitamix is capable of blending quick smoothies filled with ice, churning out smooth nut butters, and can even cook hot soup from scratch, as the friction from the blades can bring the components inside to temperature – without the fear of wearing out the motor or melting any of the components.

This model’s powerful 120v motor and internal fan keeps this unit running without burning out. Vitamix blenders separate themselves from other blenders as they do not rely on the sharpness of the blades to blend, but instead use durable blades and use the speed of the blender to blend. Keep this in mind when you are blending, as you will need to treat this similar to a manual vehicle: going from max speed to off is like going from max gear to neutral, and can cause common errors that could cause long-term issues with your Vitamix blender.

The Vitamix has 3 pre-programmed settings (for smoothies, hot soups & frozen desserts) for easy-to-use controls at the click of a button. A programmable timer ensures you get the perfect timing for each of the Vitamix’s unique uses. While the A2500, and other blenders in Vitamix’s Ascent line feature dishwasher safe containers, you can also easily wash this Vitamix by adding water and a dash of dish soap and running the Vitamix.

However, the Vitamix is a large unit: The 64 oz container is taller for creating a strong vortex but might be too tall for going under countertops due to its height, and it can take up a lot of counter space with its nearly 11-inch-wide base. Another thing worth noting is its price: Vitamix blenders are known for their high price, and while not everyone will need to spend $400 plus on a blender, these units are powerful and durable, so the Vitamix is more of an investment than other blenders. With a 10-year warranty, you can tell Vitamix stands by their products.

Pros
  • Powerful blender with superb performance.
  • Wide range of settings for optimized performance.
  • Excellent warranty.
Cons
  • Vitamix’s are a very expensive investment.
  • Takes up a lot of space.

Best blender for drinks

KitchenAid K150 3 Speed Ice Crushing blender

A solidly priced blender with an extensive list of components, this KitchenAid model is great for anyone who does a sizeable amount of blending.

The KitchenAid K150 includes a 48-oz blender jar, two 16-oz blending jars for personal use, jar lids for each, and a sharp blade assembly for strong blending. Any time a blender comes with a variety of jars is great for versatility – you can make a big batch of pasta sauce in the 48-oz jar or individual smoothies with no real difference to how well the machine is going to work.

The KitchenAid K150 features 3 different speeds, as well as a specialized Ice-Crush setting for slushy cold beverages in less than 10 seconds. KitchenAid’s Intelli-Speed motor control is able to sense what you are blending and provide optimal power for all your ingredients. Another feature that helps this blender blend optimally is the Soft Start feature, which pulls the contents inside towards the blades and reduces splatter.

Users seem to really enjoy this inexpensive blender for its strong performance for making smoothies and slushes. The specialized ice crushing mode seems to be a favourite among reviewers. Other strong features of this blender are how quiet it is and the number of components it has included.  Some people did not like that this blender featured plastic jars, and the lack of storage lid for the containers is unfortunate. However, for a blender that has strong performance for most applications that does not cost a fortune, we highly recommend this KitchenAid K150 blender.

Pros
  • Strong blender performance, crushing ice like nothing.
  • Decent sized selection of blender jars.
Cons
  • Plastic jars are not as durable.

Best blender under $200

Ninja Professional Plus with Auto-iQ

Not everybody that needs a powerful blender is in the position or has the inclination to spend Vitamix money. However, many cheap blenders may struggle to run every day. For a powerful blender at an easy to justify price, the Ninja Professional Plus is a solid choice.

All with the press of a button, this can cut through the most like the most skillful ninja. With a 6-blade assembly, and a powerful motor with a peak 1400 watts, the Ninja Professional Plus can slice, dice and puree whatever you put inside it. Ninja’s Auto-IQ is an intelligent pre-set program, which utilizes patterns of blending and stopping to optimize blending. The Ninja Professional Plus Blender has 3 pre-sets: smoothie, extract, and ice crush – the latter strong enough that you do not need to worry about burning out the motor when blending ice.

The Ninja Professional Plus features a large, 72-oz Pitcher, making it great for families, since you can make smoothies or milkshakes for everyone, but the Duo features two 24-oz single serve containers for smaller batches. The plastic blender containers are also BPA free. You will not have to spend too much time cleaning it either, as it is easily disassembled, and the blending containers are completely dishwasher safe. Another feature we like is the locking lid, with a pitcher spout for easy pouring.

Users really find this blender excellent for the money. For people whose main use for their blender is smoothies or juices, this blender will prove itself for these purposes. However, there are some detractors to this blender. Some have noted that the plastics do not seem as durable as Ninja blenders of the past.

Pros
  • Strong motor performance.
  • Good for crushing ice.
  • Dishwasher safe.
Cons
  • Plastic components are not as durable as more expensive blenders.

Best blender under $100

Ninja QB 900B Master Prep

Those of us just trying to get out the door in the morning with a quick breakfast will need an inexpensive blender that is strong for making smoothies. For a cheap blender – sub $100 – the Ninja QB 900B is an excellent blender that can be extremely useful, especially for your smoothies in the morning.

This budget blender can surprisingly blend above its price point, easily cutting through frozen fruits with its 400W motor and razor-sharp blades. Users have also been impressed with the way this blender is able to crush ice effortlessly. One important flaw is that the position of the blades with this blender are too high for certain applications – the lower the lowest blade sits, the less liquid can be effectively blended, so you can forget making blender hollandaise with this model.

Most blenders featured on this list include a powered base – the Ninja QB instead features a powered lid that attaches to either a 48-oz prep pitcher and a 16-ounce prep bowl. With wide, no-slip bases, you do not need to worry about the stability to this unique set up. Storage lids are included to store things for later use – perfect for sauces like salsa. Two versatile sizes allow for using the right size container for your purposes, and both are dishwasher safe and BPA free.

People really enjoy this blender for how easy it is to use, how well it blends, and the price. The smaller size is great for making individual smoothies, or a quick salsa. There are a few criticisms of this unit, although none that would be potential deal-breakers. Firstly, the unit has several components, and no smart way to store them together to minimize the cupboard space it may take up. There is also no automation, or locking buttons, meaning you must hold down the button until the blender is finished – however it is not very likely you will be blending longer than a minute at a time.

Pros
  • Multifunctional.
  • Affordable blender with solid performance.
Cons
  • Large number of components with no smart way to store them together.
  • Difficult to clean.

Best portable blender

La Rêveuse Personal Blender

You have likely seen blenders like this around – small, portable, and inexpensive that can meet your daily blending needs. The La Rêveuse Personal Blender features a variety of mug-like containers and drinkable lids, making this blender pretty good dupe for its Nutribullet predecessor.

With any similar model of blender, you are trading power for convenience and portability. However, the La Reveuse Personal Blender features a 250W motor, meaning it is powerful enough to blend your smoothies. As with all personal-sized blenders, be mindful about not loading the container with enough liquids or frozen fruits, otherwise you will struggle.

The La Reneuse Personal Blender comes with a large number of components, including a 16 oz Tall Cup, a 16 oz shorter cup, and a collection of lids for drinking and sealing purposes. All of the components are BPA free.

There is a number of flaws that models like this one have across the board – not just for La Reneuse’s blender, but all bullet-style blender. They are not strong enough to power through difficult jobs like making nut butters or crushing ice, and if you push them to do so, you will end with a broken blender. Some users have commented that the smaller blades do not agitate the whole mixture, instead blending the bottom and leaving the top untouched. For simpler tasks, they are fine, but they are very limited. Users like these blenders for how easy they are to use and clean, and the portability is a nice factor too. However, if you want to bring one with you for frozen margaritas at your lakeside lot, keep in mind that you will be unable to get a nice, slushy beverage with a model like this.

Pros
  • Cheap blender.
  • Sealable and carriable lids.
Cons
  • Cannot handle chunky frozen fruits or ice cubes.

Best blender for baby food

Nutri Bullet Baby Food System

In terms of value for your dollar, this Nutri Bullet Baby Food Prep System is the way to go. With an extensive number of components and a decent blender system, this unit lets you save money on baby food while knowing exactly what your little ones are eating.

For less than $100, you get a large batch bowl, a blender cup, spatula, 6 storage cups with date dials, and a 6-batch silicone tray, so you can prepare an entire week’s worth of food for your young one. All components are dishwasher safe so you don’t spend too much time cleaning up. It is made of non-toxic, BPA free plastic which does make it feel a bit flimsy, but ultimately baby safe.

Users enjoy the ease of this unit, and the ability to make baby food for the week ahead is very nice for busy parents. Being a Nutri-bullet, veggies should be steamed beforehand to make it easier to process, as these blades are not super powerful.

Pros
  • Affordable unit that will help you save even more on baby food.
  • Lots of accoutrements.
  • Dishwasher safe, BPA-free plastic.
Cons
  • Will struggle blending harder foods.
  • Motor burns with heavy loads.

Best immersion blender

KitchenAid Variable Corded Blender

If your blender usage consists of making soups or sauces, a hand blender like this KitchenAid Variable Corded Blender might do you better than a traditional blender.

Immersion blenders are handheld devices that feature a blade end that can blend when submerged in a mixture. Not only does this set up allow you to blend in a variety of containers including pots and roasting pans, but it gives an extra level of control when it comes to blending too. With variable speed with this immersion blender, the control you get with this blender is exceptional, able to do everything from smooth sauces to silky smoothies.

This KitchenAid immersion blender features an 8” Blending Arm, with a 4-point blade for efficient blending, and a removeable pan guard to protect your cookware from the blades. Also included with this immersion blender is a 3-cup blending jar, which allows you to make sauces or smoothies easily with this blender. The BPA-free jar features a lid for storing leftover sauces in your fridge.

Users are typically impressed by the easiness of using this immersion blender for whatever purposes, however ensure you include enough liquid with your smoothies, otherwise the blender might auto shut-off. Comparatively, the unit is very easy to clean as the stick component is the only component that needs attention. One thing that users have had issues with is the Proposition 65 warning on this product, which states if a product has cancer-causing chemicals in them above a certain level. While this label may concern some, these labels exist due to a California law that states that any product with any chemicals used from a large list of potentially carcinogenic chemicals needs a warning. This label is here due to the stainless-steel blades, which uses nickel in the manufacturing process, and is more to protect the company from lawsuits than to protect you from cancer.

Pros
  • Impressive range of control.
  • Variable speeds for different uses.
  • Inexpensive.
Cons
  • May struggle with too much ice or frozen fruit.
  • Some may be concerned with the Proposition 65 warning.

Frequently asked blender questions

What is a blender and how does a blender work?

Blenders are small appliances that can mix foods into liquid or chopped pieces. It typically consists of a container— made from plastic, glass or steel – a lid to keep contents inside, a rotating metal blade at the bottom, and the electric motor in the base. When the motor is activated, the blades spin and cut the food into fine pieces.

How do you use a blender?

A standard blender just requires a button push to operate. Fill the container with your ingredients and a liquid to aid in the blending process. Plug in the base, and choose the setting at which you’d like to blend – chopping at low, puree at medium and crushing ice at high speeds. Secure the lid and place one hand on top to prevent any splashes. Leave the blades spinning in 30-60 second pulses so the motor won’t overheat and melt any rubber components inside.

How do you clean a blender?

Ideally right after you use it, pour out the contents and swish a bit of warm water in the container to dislodge any food particles underneath the blade, especially if the make doesn’t allow it to be dislodged from the container. If you are able to take apart the components, rinse the blade to ensure any food particles don’t set on the blade and make them ineffective. If your model is not dishwasher safe, handwash the container in warm soapy water.

Food processor vs. Juicer vs. Blender: What’s the difference?

Understandably, many people don’t see the difference. Juicers separates the juices from the fibres of the produce, resulting in thinner juices without the pulps and fibres. The differences between a blender and processor, however, lie in the blades and motor. The blades in a blender are blunter, for making smoothies and purees. The sharper blades of a processor allow it to pulverize nuts and seeds. The other difference is that the motor in a blender is more powerful than the one in a food processor to help it liquify food.

Where to buy a blender in Canada?

You can find a good selection of blenders on sale at major retail stores in Canada, such as WalmartCanadian Tire or Costco. There are also some higher-end brands, like Smeg and Instant Pot, available at department stores like Hudson’s Bay. They can also be bought from many online stores, including Amazon.
